Project:
The Crust and the Core. Evolving urbanism at Roa.
SJ423 - ROA THE CRUST AND THE CORE. EVOLVING URBANISM AT ROA.
In Roa, the future isn´t built once. All who call it a home cultivate, tend, and transform it. Urbanism shapes the visible forms - the crust and the core – social, ecological, and temporal forces that give it meaning. Timing matters: climate-adapting landscapes and buildings as scaffolds for collective life, and public rooms foster connection and stewardship. Mobility prioritises walking, cycling, public transport, and weaving routes, combining ecology and life. Frøystad becomes a laboratory for cooperative urbanism, fusing old and new. Thin Buildings are relational, re-use matter, harvest rain, and produce energy for Roa’s autonomy. Here, care is infrastructure, design is inclusion, and worldmaking is a process – not an object but a place continually shaped by its people and environment.
