12 architectural proposals for a new heart of Roa

An international competition challenges out-migration and builds a vision for the future of the village.
The Europan 18 competition to transform the former Frøystad school site into a vibrant community center has received 12 exciting proposals. The proposals have now been made public, offering Roa and Lunner municipality a unique opportunity to create a modern and vital village.
Roa faces a number of challenges, such as out-migration, spread-out development, and an aging population. These challenges are well-known to many small towns in Norway. The Europan competition challenged young architects, landscape architects, and urban planners to develop solutions for Roa's future.
The 12 proposals present new ideas for how the Frøystad site can become a lively center and, at the same time, serve as a springboard for a strategic plan for future development throughout the village.

"We are incredibly proud of the great interest in Roa. These 12 proposals give us a unique opportunity to create the lively and modern center that Roa deserves," says Torstein Branderud, Housing and Business Advisor for Lunner Municipality.
"This is an exciting and important step for Lunner municipality. The Europan competition shows us new, innovative ways to tackle the challenges of population changes and urban development. We now look forward to selecting a project that can give Frøystad and Roa a new life," adds Eivinn Fjellhammer, Municipal Director for Area and Community.
The process is now entering an exciting judging phase. A star-studded international jury visited Trondheim this week to begin the selection. The jury consists of Magnus Waage, Kotchakorn Voraakhom, Jens Richter, Siri Lundestad, Rainer Stange, Therese Øijord Rustad, and Mansoor Hussain. Read more about the jury here.
All proposals will be featured in a public exhibition at Frøystad from September 9 to September 19. You can also see the proposals at Lunnerdagen on September 20 at Lunner Ungdomsskole.
The winning projects will be announced on November 17. The winning teams will receive a prize of 12,000 euros, while the second-place team will receive 6,000 euros, in addition to follow-up assignments from the municipality.
