A place between the suburbs and the forest

This proposal for a new kind of dwelling infrastructure for Hjertelia is different in nature to both the urban and suburban conditions of the town of Hønefoss. The new quarter engages with the land structure of the fields, topography and forest clearings that surround the town. A new type of settlement is planned with a high-density arrangement of 2 and 3 storey terraced buildings which will be distinct from their neighbours, resisting the existing suburban tendency for detached wide-fronted houses central to a large plot in favour of a more efficient, tight relationship of terraces and gardens. Replacing former agricultural land with a compact field of homes enclosed within a walled garden will protect and expand adjacent natural environments and habitats, and encourage all forms of life to grow into the new landscape infrastructure.
