Minescape
NM467 - NOME MINESCAPE
What if a “mineral park” could enhance, rather than diminish, biodiversity and democratic access to quality landscapes? This proposal envisions a collaborative parametric approach to the ecological, social, and economic tradeoffs that are inherent to the concept of a “sustainable mineral park."
Moving beyond the existing approach to habitat substitution, we ask how the park's built elements could be arranged in order to amplify ecological succession, habitat formation, and recreational access.
An open “spatial script” guides the layout of the infrastructural elements (roads, dams, tailings ponds, building pads, etc.). This allows dams and tailings ponds to be divided into smaller units, strategically splitting existing watersheds into geodiverse landscapes and preserving riparian zones as the main drivers of ecological succession.
