A forest with clearings

Our proposal restructures Åkrehamn as a forest with clearings, rather than a collection of buildings and roads. 3 key public spaces form clearings amongst the trees: in the heart of the town we propose a new Cultural Square which connects the Kulturhus and the old school, featuring a small forest with clearings for playing, sitting, and chatting – a microcosm of the wider “forest” of Åkrehamn; the old town square, which becomes a food market and the hub of the main trade area; and the harbour quay, which becomes a hub of recreation for the town, with a redesigned quayside and direct access to the water, a lido, outdoor cinema, and a new boathouse lending kayaks and paddle boards. Alongside these new clearings, routes in and around the town can become paths through the forest.
